  • Belong

I belong to the silvan depths of summer
    To languid days
And fireflies that scatter the night with fairy dust
I revel in tempest-tossed oceans of autumn
    In flaming trees
And sweeping winds, filling the sails of daydreams
I belong to the raw honesty of winter
    The bone-cold trees and hills
Like remnants of a cathedral lost to time
I delight in the world's awakening
    Its yawning rebirth
As it stretches green fingers into magnificent bloom

And if I come to see that you strive with me
    To belong also
To beauty and nature and nature's God
    To cascading experience and ambition
    A passion for living
And a fire for people and adventure
To bone-cold honesty of heart and soul
    To a rawness
    Of tender laughter, tired tears
To light and growth and unquenchable love
    Then maybe...
The two if us can belong to one another.

You are a Romantic with a capital R, emmiebee. The world your verse conjures is like some vitally charged fragment of Arcadia.

Well that thrills me to my socks.
THANK YOU! You have no idea what your words mean to me.

Yes! The idealism, the hope, the love of nature, the self-confidence, the sheer exuberance! What a refreshing creation, in a series of uplifting works you have posted! Thank you for sharing, emmiebee.

Hi Emmie, The parallel line lengths of the 12 line stanzas is appealing, as is the directness of the language. No need to be edgy when you have something to say. Puts me in mind of Amy Lowell.

    I belong in your world!
    All the beauty unfurled
As I read all your wonderful phrases.
    Your world's a delight
When I see with your sight
Then the magic of nature amazes!
    So thank you for sharing
    A world full of caring:
Your love of the world's without doubt.
    I've enjoyed your vision
    Expressed with precision;
    Your poem is lovely, throughout.

I can't help but thrill when someone replies to my poem with a poem! That's what it's all about. Thanks for reading and leaving your beautiful words!

I like the tightrope walk you do between idealism and realism, as it's this balance that keeps the 'believers' of love sane. How should we earn the fairy dust without bone-cold trees and hills? I love the line about belonging to Nature and Nature's God. The comfort of that vastness and divine order. Beautiful poem!

Thank you so very much! It's a balance indeed! I've tried to hold both a winter-some relationship and a fairy-dust fling - neither work. Thank you kindly for reading and commenting!

The overdue arrival of some lovely spring weather here in England has made me appreciate the accuracy of this beautiful personification even more deeply...

'I delight in the world's awakening
      Its yawning rebirth
As it stretches green fingers into magnificent bloom'

The imagery it creates is perfect: 'yawning rebirth' is my favourite of all. 😀
