  • Marching Orders

War on terror, war on thugs,
    war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
    Flying bullets, killing slugs,
didn't learn a thing from Vietnam.

    Alll this fighting and feuding,
we have an arsenal and weapon of every kind.
We all know there's corruption and colluding,
rob the mint, there's more money to print; no one seems to mind.

    Contacts, and billion dollar contracts,
for the armory; the warships, and the latest fighter jet.
Passing the buck, and slapping backs,
add some more to the debt.

We need to drop more bombs,
    leave behind orphans and widows,
    and grieving dads and moms.
The killed, we don't even know if they're friends or foes.

People don't care what they spend,
for peace of mind and a sense of security,
It's been going on and on, and it will never end,
fighting to be free, protect us from the enemy.

Uncle Sam, he doesn't really give a damn,
he never will and never has.
He has an agenda and it's a scam,
did you really believe that jazz?

    Now the war on poverty,
that's one they don't want to tackle,
It's not an issue of priority,
while cities and folks, grapple with their own day to day battle.

Soldiers and civilians, we all have our marching orders.
fall in and follow the leaders.
They'll cut the budget, and cut corners,
while they take us to the cleaners.

The chiefs and and masterminds, gather safe at headquarters,
with maps and graphs, they plan and strategize,
moves for the newest marching orders.
On the front lines; bugle calls, and battle cries.

Our efforts and resources would be better spent,
on rebuilding broken lives, and the neglected community.
    I would make the argument,
we've won nothing, but lost our last best hope; our humanity.

Perhaps someday, when mankind acknowledges what it has done, and begs mercy for it's sins against one another. Until then I'm afraid, the world will never be without the "war machine". Having said that, this was a very good read.

Thanks Graydon, I agree and it is a sad thing. If more people were kinder to each other, it would be a start. Thanks for the compliment.

What does it take to make a man follow, me I look both ways before crossing. It's along and winding road some are on, me I'm just trying to get to the other side, without becoming a dead skunk.

Grevis. We need reminders like this. To ask questions about motives. To keep the fire burning (J.B.) and carry the torches passed along from other poets and songwriters.

After rereading it, I noticed a couple of spelling errors. Damn, I bet that would disqualify me.I corrected it on here, but it's to late for the contest.

I don't think my original comment came through. I did get one response. I guess my message offends his views. That is why I wrote it, for people who think with narrow minds, and just follow along blindly without even stopping to think first, and as you said ask questions. You got my point, and I appreciate that you did. We need to think more rationally, and not just react with no thought other than the one at the moment. We are routinely being told how and what to think, and most people go along with what is being fed to them
