My grandma kept dull scissors in her bag
into which (snip snip) fell a rosemary sprig
    each day at 3 o’clock

    She boiled the needly quill
its soap-wash stink stuck in my clothes
all for a cup of viridescent tea
    “For me? Yech.”
    “Good for the memory.”

    She was a post-Soviet Russian
    and always scared of forgetting

And then, one day, she was caught
watching our neighbors, men, sharing a kiss
appalled, she vowed, to never honor them with theft again

She wouldn’t let me change her mind
    but it did change, or
    perhaps she just forgot
her threat, dissipated by the pine-breath
    that filled our little kitchen
