    UNDERSTANDING
Pondering lost memories from decades’ worth of life,
Remembering the tears, of joy, despair, and strife,
Comes forth an understanding, most personal indeed,
For it has formed my character and ultimately, my creed.

That being born to lower class can be one’s crucifixion,
That poverty like riches can corrupt morals and conviction.
    This much I understand,
Though my heart may never comprehend.

That society will judge you by your total net worth,
And judge you even harsher by your origin of birth.
    This much I understand,
Though my heart may never comprehend.

That there are injustices that can never be rectified,
That cruelty and apathy can never be justified.
    This much I understand,
Though my heart may never comprehend.

That mankind’s depravation can leave you aghast,
And blind eyes still abound today, as much as in the past.
    This much I understand,
Though my heart may never comprehend.

That when it’s all been said and done, and curtain comes to call,
The legacy of life itself -- I alone cannot forestall.
    This much I understand,
Though my heart may never comprehend.

That riches don’t quite matter, my worth is deep within,
That reality has never been quite like it seems.
    This much I understand,
Though my heart may never comprehend.

That love prevails all and yesterday is gone,
That wreckage from the past has long been forgone.
That all that really matters is the love and care I’m giving,
The ones I truly love and the love I am receiving.

    This much I understand,
This much… my heart can truly comprehend.
