missing parts

i've always heard people say
'loan a hand'
and i was always afraid
it wouldn't help me stand.
that what if one time
your hand didn't help me quite through
that what if all after all
your help, i still felt blue.
what would i do then?
who's hand am i going to need?
would you help me more,
or leave me there to bleed?
so maybe fixing me wouldn't
be quite as easy as you thought
would you give it one more try,
or leave me there to rot?
because i couldn't quite forget
just yet, i still felt the pain
just like under an umbrella
you'd still feel the rain.
and then the question in
my mind took a while to understand:
what if i was missing a shoulder,
instead of a hand?
