    Unworn clothes scattered on the floor;
    A mother’s eyes — a father’s hand
    Searching for tears, life restore —
    Eyes that know the night of vacant pram.
    Painted bears peer with feigned lament
    On the couple embraced in shade,
    With mocking eyes and cruel intent
    Grinning at their hope’s joy betrayed.
    Now only silence can be heard
    Where coos and cries find better nest,
    Parents nestle stilled, darkness gird:
    Two, and two alone, know the rest.
