Green Grass at E. L.'s Funeral
(or rather, what I should have been thinking of)

Every time that I think back to E. L.'s funeral,
and I often do in the cold fall months as I look out over my lawn,
    I remember the green grass.

As I had stood there listening,
    but not really listening,
to the solemn man speaking out over a shiny gray coffin,
I kept glancing out upon the hill near the ceremony.

My attention gathered upon the green grass.

It was late fall at the time,
    uncomfortably cold,
and yet that grass was as green as could be.

    I had at the time,
thought of looking for a grounds keeper,
and asking him how he had kept the grass so green.

I had thought that If I knew,
I could do the same at home.

    But I did not,
trying to respect the solemnity of the occasion.

Now I stand here looking out upon my lawn,
gray and pale yellow like old hay,
thinking on the green grass at E. L.'s funeral.
