    Three quatrains and a couplet to compose
    a sonnet and beyond that there's an art,
    and rules like fourteen pentametric rows
    we use to make the sonnet stand apart.

    The assonance, the metaphore, the rhyme
    Hyperbole, anthropomorphic dream
    all nest inside and tap in perfect time
    and fit into the sonnet's rhyming scheme.

    Each line is five feet long and you might think
    that's really long enough but no - in fact
    sometimes you wish you had more space - but shrink
    your words to fit - and keep the form intact.

    The path is straight and strict - and if you roam
    outside, the sonnet dies, but not the poem​
