rhyme
my daughter asked me why i chose to rhyme
the poetry i wrote and why i chose
restrictive forms to work in all the time.
i told her without form and rhyme, it's prose.
the self restraint and discipline it takes,
like concentrating in the voting booth,
ensure the proper line and where it breaks;
but if there is no rhyme there is no truth.
she didn't take me seriously, yet
just for a lark she tried it and found out
the validation that her poems get.
now rhyme is something she won't write without.
she says to write in rhyme, she might feel crazy,
but if it doesn't rhyme, she just feels lazy.
