    The Big Day

    The days arrived
    The day is here
    Lucy is ready
    Nothing to fear

    Looking so smart
    In new uniform
    Her new jumper
    Cosy and warm

    She feels so proud
    She feels so cool
    She is ready
    First day at school

    They begin the walk
    Three side by side
    Two Mums holding
    Little hands with pride

    Time to leave her
    Amidst the throng
    Of eager students
    Mums not so strong

    They both share
    Some butterflies
    But Lucy buzzing
    Kisses goodbye

    Two Mums walk home
    Hand in hand
    Love for Lucy
    Worries withstand

    That afternoon
    They stand in wait
    Hugs at the ready
    At the school gate

    All is quiet
    Then rings the bell
    Flurry of limbs
    Lucy lots to tell

    So excited
    In every way
    Smiles all round
    On Mums big day

I have recently realised there is little recognition in most childrens books of the diversity of family structures leading to some children feeling their loving homelife is less valid. To try and help I am writing a body of poems to address this.
