Between Wars

With the dog casting on ahead,

in the dust of a summer

road where ways

met, a grassy

verge gave me pause,

There I came upon a Great War Cross.

Inlaid, the martial sword of bronze stained

green the Purbeck stone at who's foot

inset the claim 'For King and Country'

and Roll of Honoured Names

were framed in verdigris.

In that, it left unsaid,

"They died for

a politician's word."
