He rode into town
On a gloomy day
All dressed up in black
Came to earn his ill pay

Dark were his eyes
His heart was cold
At his hands men died
On the end of his rope

Moseyed to the saloon
In his somber way
Pall came over room
From the look on his face

The town knew he was back
Waiting break of day
Gauntly man in black
Came to hang Billy Ray

Left town the next morning
Cheated of his fee
Billy Ray broke free
That morning half past three

The hangman dressed in black
Will be coming back
