  • walking the border

The staggered row of eastern cedar

    Defrocked un priestly rows

That winds and bends and teeters

    And leads to heaven knows

Barbwire impaled, held on by nails

    Half driven twisted shanks

    Nothing here to hold within

Keep out or guard my flank

    Perhaps it was for cattle

    I can’t imagine sheep

    Intangible long lost chattel

A place for vines to creep

It zigzags as if a drunk had walked

From tree to post to tree

Some places now a post is lost

And the wires just dangle free

It’s here I guess the past escaped

To late to look for now

    It’s only left to contemplate

How long these post were in the ground

My new neighbor thought the property line was that old, old fence that ran down thru the woods. An ubiquitous assumption when it comes to borders. My love for westerns lead me to believe, that the outlaws heading for the border. Weren’t stopping at Taco Bell. “Hey is this old fence the border, somebody ought to put up a sign”
