    January...Bye, Bye, Bye

Last day of first month of calendar year,
thinking that spring is a little more near.
Half-way through winter (or maybe not quite)
future for some folks is trending as bright.

Others, doldrummish, to covers will crawl
dark, soft and warm (far away from it all).
While they lie burrowed, berefted of hope,
others slog on as they manage to cope.

Whether you’re “over” the wind and the snow,
or full enjoying its reign as it blows,
still every season shows up in its turn
staging a shiver (in summer a burn).

‘Bye to the first month - we’ve marked it full well.
Next comes the ground hog...oh what will he tell?

The winter itch is here, drying out my bones

Underneath my skin, scathing out a poem

The whistle pig will have his day

    Six more weeks it’s gone

    I hope.

Lovely, puts me in the mood... what kinda mood, an Earthy mood White Earth. Good flow, loved the second stanza, it fit together so well, set it up moody. Contrast is good together, like you did in the third stanza, as well, because we all vary much like the weather... in our tastes. I hope yopu had a good month, here is to this one. And good poetry, as well, thanks for sharing.

When Whistle Pig can't dull the chill
        It turns to Punxsutawny Phil,
a "No show" has so much to tell
        presaging more of frozen hell

I thought no shadow meant an early spring?? No matter, the weather follows its own designs, and we go along for the ride!

I'd dance to the beat of the doldrummers if bills didn't have to be paid. And a full sonnet with Phil in mind. Throws shadow on my ha'. :-) Nicely done, RLW!

Well, I just have to thank you for this comment because I didn't even realize it was written as a sonnet. I thought those were always written in iambic pentameter. Love the pun about shadow - but 'tis simply untrue - you excel at that form! Good to hear from you again.

The trick to having no bills is to have no spending the month before. Of course, I haven't figured out that part yet.

Many thanks Rhymeboy! I don't often think of myself as brilliant, but it sounds pretty nice coming from another poet in the zone!

Well crafted Paula. I’m bringing it out of hibernation. Spring has sprung!

Thanks Bobby. We're supposed to get a blizzard later today! Maybe I could write a "series" of end of month poems? The end of February is only about a week away....
      Working...
