  • Sweet Excavations

    Through condensation on the windscreen

    A scene of demolition surprise

Viewed by eyes that pass so quickly by

But spy the coming end of a sweet past

    Derelict transcript of young footsteps

    To doorstep of children’s desires

Shelves higher for jars that weigh heavy

For a levy of pocket money

Before the bell tolls for days lessons

    Delicatessen of sugar treats

    Greet voracious school uniforms

That swarm to the wooden counter

Wrapped raptures that stained the tongue

Young hands clutch with their fingers sticky

Some sickly gobbled with undue haste

Taste treasures of past ghosts passed by

    Mirrors view of excavation site

Sight of the future foundation shrinks

    Blinks as memories overtaken

    Shaken by progress remorseless ride
