  • The Wayward Feather (Reposted)

I wrote this poem originally as a gift for my father-in-law's 90th Birthday. Now that he is
a spry 91 and visiting us in the country, I thought I might honour him again.
He (like Dwayne) is a moral compass for our extended family.

    On a gossamer tether
Attached to my office window pane
    A small white feather
Waves like a pennant in gentle wind
    Or a ship’s flag

    I do not know how
It came to be here or from what bird
    It was lost
I think it is invisibly caged
    In an abandoned spider’s web

    Whatever it signals
Is beyond my knowing and grasp
    This gift
Like a plume of smoke looking
    For its lost fire
