    Crossroads

When all of life was in the yard

why did the chickens cross the road?

    Rhode Island Red and Wyandotte,

"A chance," the whole coop said, "Why not?"

as from the field across the way

their eyes lit on the sheen of gold,

    sheaves that spelled out a tale of old;

    rustling ears, Centeotl ‘s sigh.

"Sisters, sisters; here come and try

Sweet Corn. Peck by peck bury me

and I will come again, reborn

    from earth as in Tenochtitlan

    in an Indian Corn Sunami."

    Bold strut met tarmacadam way

when round the bend a truck unbound

pounced on poultry flailing to fly

now finding out what was to pay

for the Maize God's golden glory.

"Dumb Clucks seeking a crock of gold.

That's why chickens cain't cross the road!"

A trucker's perk adds to the load.

    Case closed.

I was responding to a writing challenge
"Why did the chicken cross the road"
      (a hoary old joke)
and that's the second path it took.
I think I'm seeing below freezing temperatures
for you so I guess your expectations of Bob's
"Reflections" have been fulfilled and worse.

It is cold here (winter is nearing), but we only had about 1.5 inches of snow (as opposed to his 5 inches). The other photos I've been posting were from a snow a few weeks ago out at the farm - about 3-4 inches. It melted almost as quickly as it arrived then. Now, it's staying colder and will likely hang around.

    The vultures feast on carrion

    A foolish leap of fate

To prod and poke and carry on

    Of single minded paths retraced

    A tarred and feathered marathon

Using greed to make the case

To the older chickens looking on

    They feel a bit disgraced

They’ve learned to look both ways
