    Acropolis Now


    A malignancy it must abate,

    Gaia's turned up the thermostat;

    a lesson to learn, or maybe not,

    that we aren't masters of Earth's lone fate.

    Our position isn't so recondite,

    as Homo Sapiens we belie the name.

    Where seas of plastic meet forests of flame

    Homer's world is verging on ruin.

      Written on the first TV images from Greece
      of smoke in the sky over the Acropolis,
      if I had stayed my hand, the subsequent
      death toll might have changed my tack
      but not the underlying thought.
