    For #WorldMentalHealthDay
    Better Story
So full of life, good cheer
Joining in any debate, up for a bit of craic
    Seemingly positive, assertive, outspoken
    You seemed to love life
But the arms told a different story
Scars, hidden by sleeves you tug at
Like the broken strings of blinds
    That could no longer descend
    To hide the heartache
    Of a different story
    Revealing vulnerabilities that shocked
    Needing help, support, you gradually
Lifted those blinds, let the light in
Creating a new and better story

I think this speaks well to your purpose of raising awareness, but in a gentle way.

Not a subject for a flip response.
    Overnight gestates the pre-story.
    As you see,
    you've made me think.

Thank you, Johntee. This was based on a woman I knew for many years who maintained a somewhat brash disposition whilst hiding untold anguish. After courageously seeking help her life improved dramatically.

It's heartening to me to know this had a good outcome. Someone close to me suffers in this way, and I often feel at a loss to know how to help.

Sorry to read that Grant; it is upsetting to observe and frustrating in terms of knowing what to say or do. It is especially heartbreaking when it is someone you are close to. Coming from an HR background, in the workplace, we always encouraged and supported individuals to seek independent professional help where they can be assured of confidentiality and a non-judgemental approach. Not that you or I would be anything else of course but sometimes when folk bare their soul in crisis they can regret it later and resent you for knowing their perceived weaknesses. I hope your friend finds the courage to seek the help they need.
