  • Hyphens

I live in a hyphenated world,
without a hyphen of my own.
    African-American
    Latin-American
    Mexican-American
    Chinese-American
    Muslim-American
    Etc.-American

    I want a hyphen
    that sets me apart.
    Gay-American
    Old-American
    Lonely-American
    Alcoholic-American
    Privileged-American
    Etc.-American

    Would you like a hyphen?
    What would you choose?
    Kind-
    Honest-
    Forgiving-
    Loving-
    Hopeful-
    Etc.-

    If you were a hyphen...

    ______ - _______

    ______- _______

    ______- _______

This is a constant quandary for me. We have labels all around, but so often instead of describing - they are used for dividing. It makes me want to eschew them altogether - even the 'nice' ones. It can offer a dilemma to a poetess wanting to employ descriptive phrasing.

I spoke with a man who asked me about hyphens and the why of them. It was he who inspired this. He asked why we can't just be human, why can't we just all be love

      Check out the little edit

      Thanks
