  • The Paths Not Taken (for suz-zen)

    What paths we have abandoned
    Or not chosen
Are not choked now by weeds
    But reconnoiter
    At a safe distance

Hauntingly like coyotes heard from afar
    That follow our scent
Our blood call lingers in their nostrils
Like the echo of chamber music

    We cannot outrun them
    Forever
We will eventually collapse in exhaustion
While their sharp teeth glisten like crescent moons
    And pause for a moment
To pay homage to the graceful curve
    Of our necks

    This is quite something Tanner
The images you have created from coyotes from afar and the stark contrast of echoing chamber music is moving!
What really got me was this... their sharp teeth glisten like crescent moons. I could see them!!
and then taking the shape of those moons and teeth to the last few lines with ... pay homage to the graceful curve
    Of our necks...
You are really on a writing peak here of late.... keep going! Thank you for sharing!

Sub-Zen, I am trying to expand my cache of imagery, in actuality to catch up to You and lunar glide - I think I see you guys somewhere far up in the distance! I would like to work on this poem; not so much with respect to tinkering but trying to expand on the beginning, and set the groundwork for the disturbing images that follow...

That's one of the lines that got me too - 'pay homage to the graceful curve of our necks' - it makes me shiver, Tanner!
