Your perfect life you gave for sinful me
And wore my errors upon your thorny crown
Through every scourge you set my burdens free
Lifting me from the sea of sin where I had drowned

What love you showed and painful price you paid
My tears cannot my gratitude convey
Slandered and mistreated, you still obeyed
A perfect life for a perfect life, you gave

AlexandratheLate, I have read this several times, and see it as a beautiful hymn that should be set to music, perhaps with a coupe more verses. There is ageless music here.

Yes, the language of the hymnbook begs for a tune here. Could easily sit alongside Charles Wesley, John Newton, and William Cowper.
