  • An Apologetic for Theodore Roethke on an Afternoon in Late November

Some say that water walks uphill
    And find reasons
For what they think is so
I need not that much of time
    I know
A low lid of clouds flattens with the day
I slighten desire as best I can
    To presently fulfill
    Let the day's late fire
Soften down the garment of skin
Then let darkness fetch its chill
    There will be time
    To meet
    And time again
To learn how to walk on air
    After that
    I have no care

Maybe allow readers a little time to digest each one of these excellent poems, Tanner, before posting another. Posting four such works in quick succession may cause some of them to receive less than the attention they deserve.

Thanks Grant for your response and recommendation. You are of course right. These 4 poems were rediscoveries from antiquity. I have actually come across my very first writings. I feel like
I am looting a tomb in ancient Egypt. Many drafts and fragments to reflect upon. thanks again.
