  • We Kept Our Mouths Shut

    We kept our mouths shut
    to keep us from agony.
    Not that we knew them
    but we knew of them.
    They knew us
    and knew where we lived
so we kept our mouths shut.
    Outsiders came,
    thousands of them.
They came to shut the mouths
    who kept our mouths shut.
    Our mouths have been open
    ever since - in agony.

Powerful for pondering. Am I ever doing any good - or just doing less evil?

Hmm can light ever travel past darkness? 🤔

I always think more of it as displacement - illuminating what was with what is. Not a philosopher here, perhaps some more of the deep thinkers in the zone will comment.

Hello RhymeLovingWriter, A conundrum indeed. Your response, as always, is very much appreciated. Regards, Tony.

Lol it was a tongue and cheek reflex to your good and evil question.

Hello lunar glide, What cost to pay for light and how can a witness ignore those in darkness. Difficult questions indeed. I do thank you very much for your input. Regards, Tony.

Hello Darthvader, To ponder and so much to ponder and all the while the darkness. Your response is most appricated. Regards, Tony.

I like this Tony! Especially: They knew us
    and knew where we lived
so we kept our mouths shut.

Hello Suz-zen, 'We know where you live', was a threat often used by all those involved in violence in the bad old days of Northern Ireland. Thank you very much for responding, kind of you indeed. Regards, Tony.

ah yes, the bad old days can be found in many places Tony.
your last two lines speak to me as a foretelling of what could be in my country, though I hope and pray it is not.

      'Our mouths have been open
      ever since - in agony.'

This poem gets better with each read.

We do keep our mouths shutter, too often uttering protests from the point of a gun.
