  • Are You Worth More Than a Collection of Words?

Are you worth more than a collection of words?
Of easy rhymes and cheap lines--
    Cluttered with quick wit,
In a full length script of life,
Are you worth more than the things you've heard?
Are you worth more than a friend's collection of words?

Are you worth more than simple uttered phrases?
Spoken by priests in holy places,
To family that kept their faith when you created space divided,
Deep in cathedrals where you no longer feel invited.
Are you just remembered through the sacred phrases?

Are you worth more than pretty sounding poetry?
Of flowing thoughts heard and running words slipped through ink?
Is all you are the complex imagery of what a poet thinks?
Are you words on paper so thin it tears?
Are you another language so forgotten that no one seems to care?

Are you just worth a paragraph, with no asterisks to further tell--
Your story, your life, your joy, your strife, before it all went to hell.

Yes, I am worth more than collection of words! I may not be perfect but yes, I am worth it! I like the poem! Thought evoking piece!

Thank you, Grant. It has haunted my heart for days, just the idea that when I'm gone, the only way people can explain who or what or how I was is in a Collection of Words.

I have read this many times over since you posted Benjamin. Not only do I really love it - but it spoke to me directly and with an immediacy that inspired a whole new poem. Grant says this one broke through to his heart. It has surrounded mine and given a prick to my conscience to boot.

Here is the poem that wrote itself after I'd read yours - Evening Prayer. Whether your intent or not - your work has blessed me this day. Many, many thanks.

I'm glad you found any enjoyment at all.

Beautiful Write! We only live in moments and fragments recalled - visual images and words entwined. As an obscure Argentinian poet, Antonio Porchia, once wrote, "One lives in hope of becoming a memory".
