    James Wright

The wheat leans back toward its own darkness,
And I lean toward mine. – James Wright

    Life-long depression
Picked at you like a black crow
    Feasting on roadside carrion

    Your life
Was an embodiment of the bleak landscape
    Of the post-industrial Midwest

    James
You thought the bottle could fashion a truce
    With pain and anguish

    Your ongoing bipolar mood swings
    Got you acquainted
    Often with the looneybin

    As a visitor
    They repeatedly zapped your brain
    With electroshock therapy

    The White Coats hoped
To jolt you toward the bright light of day
What did they know of poetry

    Your eloquent poems
    Heralded the disenfranchised
The American outsider who was yourself

    James
    I often think of your
Blue Jay hopping up and down

    In utter abandonment and delight
    Who knows like you
That the branch will not break
