  • a clock

    Likely to pace
    while others still slumber
    single in searching the
    holes in the sky

    Weeping with children
    out cold in the valley
    arms stretched clear open
    collecting their sighs

    gasping at heartache
    not one
    but in wholeness

    A clock
    it has sounded

    One person

    it's
    time.

Beautifully enigmatic, Suz-zen; I find this fascinating. Assuming it's all an extended metaphor (which is a safe assumption with you), I am pondering the ambiguous relationship between timepiece and person. This seems to suggest an individual decision to act, having been biding time. Lots of spellcraft in these words, Suz-zen.

I have a high tolerance for enigma. For me that term denotes a style rather than actual opacity. As I reread, the sense of it becomes clear, and I am more conscious of the subtle rhythm.

This may be a very beautiful depiction of the concept of solidarity - and the capture of the moment when a person gets off the fence and moves into action - on one side or the other. In this case, moved by empathy with the suffering of others. I love it! Though the clock ticks on - the path is decided. Bravo Suz-zen!

Hello Suz-zen, You write with sacred beauty - time, the everywhere, the evermore, the constant, our constant companion, as in the, all and the, individual. Always the faithful witness, before nothingness, out of nothingness and into the forever. Each tick, a moment and every moment in this poem chimes with unadulterated beauty. An ethereal compassionate verse and yet composed with temporal panache. A rare delight indeed. Regards, Tony.

your comments are dear to me @TonyGrannell.... I have, as time goes on and the more i am fully present and am witness to my own life and life as 'whole' all connected LOVE/FEAR suffering/beauty attempt, as many artists do to 'make sense' of the senseless...(i ramble here) ...into the forever with all... and yet alone. again thank you

This poem is beautifully written, Suz-zen. Though the language is straightforward, the deeper meaning eludes giving it a dual aspect. It's an extra base hit!

Hi MHenry Your words are meaningful to me.
Poetry I think ought to be straightforward and and allow a meaning to fall onto the reader w a gentle meaning that might elucidate or help or calm or even leave a little head scratching.Thank you for reading and Liking and always for your support.

There is a wonderfully deep feeling with this poem, Suz-zen. The sense of introspection it evokes, leading to a hard decision or action. Grant's word enigmatic is perfect. Wonderful!

You're welcome! 😊 I like the upside down Christmas tree (!?) or a funnel? ...symbolizing gift-giving to children in need this coming season? or someone's contemplation of giving... after realizing her/his purpose to help others...
