    Rebel - Redux

    Though a rebel I have never been*
    I’ve always meant to try;
    yet when urged to act by other men
    my first response is ‘why’?
    When the motives rabble most expound
    fall phony on my ear,
    or contentions cry for ends unsound –
    I’ll answer not from fear.

    When my reasoning, to move or hold,
    spends moments you’d not take,
    or impatience with me ferries bold
    advance for what’s at stake;
    as observer of impassioned plea
    I’ve yet no mind to heed,
    would more docile tongue encourage me
    in lieu of self-made screed?

    If a danger-ridden threat portends
    to set our lives ablaze,
    of my passive ways I’d soon be cleansed –
    and draft those yet unfazed.
    For an honored cause I’d yield and then
    with onward motion ride;
    though a rebel I have never been,
    I’d battle at your side.

    If I don’t espouse your combat call,
    from on disparate side,
    I will catch you still each time you fall –
    it’s not about my pride.
    I will serve the greatest Master’s plan
    Who walked a humble way;
    for a Love cast bold for fellow man,
    will surely win the day.

    * (bĕn) Mid-western American Pronunciation

    This is a rewrite done after a critique on another forum. The middle two stanzas contain the most substantial change. The first and final were tweaked for syllable count, meter, and word choice.

    Rhymist, this is one of those poems you come up with from time to time that would play well to a wide audience, particularly a church-going one. It's accessible, challenges the average comprehension level, and teaches a topical moral lesson in a straightforward way.

      Thanks Grant - it was actually inspired by the vitriolic rhetoric flying around before (and apparently continuing after) our most recent elections. I have little patience with people who lambast others just for thinking differently than they do. Really - what arrogance! I know that in some circles I'm an outlier, and in others I'd be considered mainstream - but I'm perplexed and annoyed by those who think because I hold one opinion on one issue -that they automatically know all of my opinions on all issues. It does such a disservice to the uniqueness of the individual - even if human beings often act and think with herd mentality. I appreciate your comments - I wasn't intending to sermonize - it was more like venting in the safest possible way I know. Thanks for giving it a look.

      Being hastily pigeonholed is a drag, even a pain in the arse. I find the best antidote is mockery, if one can be bothered.

      I'm such a tender touch that I fail at that too - looking back in guilt instead of triumph - even if I've gotten the upper hand. Sigh. So I write poetry instead.

    So no "rebel without a cause" for you? I enjoyed reading because of the casual flow and the lesson. I can hear this as a song, perhaps. I am not a song writer but I can hear the following as the chorus

    I will serve the greatest Master’s plan
    Who walked a humble way;
    for a Love cast bold for fellow man,
    will surely win the day.

      I guess not rhymetime - my cause has to be pretty carefully weighed and considered before I go to battle. Although there's a little part of me that realizes the rebels are often the 'coolest and freest looking cats' around. The ones who live the moment with abandon sure have been made to look appealing, but I don't think it's me. Or only me in little doses and for very limited time frames.

    This is beautifully written and musical in its meter and rhyme.

    This pair really resonates for me having been a rebel myself, simply for the sake of being a rebel.

    Though a rebel I have never been*
    I’ve always meant to try;

    It is honest and relatable.

      Thanks MHenry. I figure that as long as I'm still breathing, there is always a chance.
