    'Passion Among The Plumeria'

    She planted plumeria
    in uberous soil

    with the passion flower
that sat slowly dying on the vine.

    Same sunshine
    morning after morning
    waiting to blossom.

    Purple promises never to arrive

    Gentle friend offers gift
    of pink hope.

    With marriage of fertile soil
    rain-dropped years
    from Heaven past
opening of a different flower appears
    not quite expected

    and treasured still.

    Unpredictable
    Unplanned
    ever-blooming

    A quiet
    fragrance of kiss
    only at night.
Sphinx moth to delight the moon's
    fruitless search for nectar.

    Yet, passion arrives
    among plumeria.

This is a gorgeous piece, Suz-zen. Your characteristic attunement to the senses is turned up to 11 in this exquisitely poised and paused reflection. I love how you've worked the meaning of flowers here, their growth and fragrance an index to experience.

a real life observation used as a metaphor for many facets of life... i have yet to get even one blossomed passion flower, though i water and fertilize and nurture... a gift from a kindhearted friend of plumeria that i stuck in the same pot only a day ago blossomed oh so brightly this morning... i was swept away by its beauty and fragrance ... reading how to care for it i learned about the sphinx moth... it is a real thing! who knew?? Certainly, not I!
Until this morning.... this is really about friendship... sweet nectar... sharing tears... seeing love unexpected.
Thank you, as always, dear grant hayes for being to in tune with my writing!

Absolutely beautiful in execution Suz-zen. I remember well the plumeria tree in our front yard while we lived in Hawaii - and fragrant leis created there from. I particularly liked these lines (among many others):

    Unpredictable
    Unplanned
    ever blooming

The happiest of surprises! What a delight!

thank you so very much Guest. The plumeria really are something! In Hawaii are one of my fond memories from visits long ago. I love that you had a tree! thank you for selecting these lines as I liked them too.

A poem ostensibly about flowers beautifully written turns out to be about friendship, love, and passion, perhaps as unexpected as the blooming plumeria and as disappointing as the reticent passion flower. This is a marvelously crafted poem, Suz-zen! I read it multiple times!

Immediately upon reading this I thought of finding love and friendship in the last place you would look. How we cultivate our dreams and then suddenly find beauty and dare I say love in a place or with a person we never dreamt of. Makes you want to reexamine your dreams. Lovely verse.

Very beautiful with deliberate spacing to reflect and pause, enraptured with unexpected loveliness and another chance. Just beautiful SuzZen.

Not always ready to see the other chance... . 'another chance'... if willing , it most certainly is there...and always with love and beauty. thank you ALT.
