    Better Than That

    daring – not second nature
    crept soundlessly upon nettled brow
skewing visage from frightened to fury
    instant of desperation

    no, not instant, decades
    generation formed centuries
    pile upon pile reckoning
    victims unnumbered, innumerable

    cries, ties, lies, skies
    compounded, confounding, reducing,
    past human endurance choices;
utter lack prevailing on impatience pounding

    look honest in these eyes
    soul-deep no guile to bear
no guilt, no privilege assigned without cause
color of outer wrapping will not suffice

tired, so tired of weary implications
side by side walking without blame
    forgiving without forgetting
    noble endeavor indeed

do not become what you purport to hate
high road stands open to travel

Thanks AtL. Who 'we' and 'they' are remains for each to say. Thanks for the read, like, and comment!

When it's roaming through my head it sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't. 'Them's the breaks' as saying goes! Thanks for the read and comment LG.

The only thing we have to fear? Can we take the road less traveled. Excellent!

Passionate and poetic, RLW. Many appealing turns of phrases here!

Yes, MHenry. There is no rhyme, but I did let the phrasing dictate where it wanted to go (like I usually do with rhyme).
