  • Flesh and Bone

    We are not now safe,
    nor have we ever been.
Not in the comfort of our beds,
or the pews where we pray,
Not in jets above our heads,
    or on the highway.
Not at your 9 to 5,
    or at the ballroom,
    neither at the local dive,
    nor in your living room.
    Not at the shopping mall,
or where you watch a flick,
I know, my statements only appall.
    The truth?
    It makes you sick.
    But we must not run
    from rigid facts,
    or shrink from reality,
we abide in the world that is,
not the one we wish to see.
    And yet,
    the children have a birthright
to hope, to dream, to play,
let not spectres of fear unite,
    to chase their youth away.
    Our past is admonition,
we must heed her wise refrain,
    obedience trumps contrition,
    not a soul, inter again!
    For nihilism is no virtue,
    cynicism is not the key.
    And no amount of surveillance,
    will grant security.
    We must dare
    to live the lives,
    we seek to live,
    and treat our neighbours
    as our own,
    for the essence of
    what we are,
    transcends
    mere flesh and bone.

Wonderful, DWAYNE! The form enforces the message so you don't see the form. Very well done!

            This begs to be
            declaimed, orated,
            fulminated.
            It is too gated
            and fettered
            on a mere page.

We must not get caught with our moral pants down. Live the life you were born to live right now every moment and when it's our time we will have no regrets.

A rhyming admonition, well-written and powerful, Dwayne.
We may be more than flesh and bone, but those parts are very important, and I am not in a hurry to lose them!

Neither am I. But since I am destined to lose them anyway, I would rather enjoy my life, and not allow prejudice, or hyper-vigilance, to deprive others of enjoying theirs. If we are to restrict the rights of fellow citizens, and the facts sometimes justify doing that, we ought to have tangible evidence, before doing so.

Holmes said the Constitution is not a suicide pact, however, it is not merely a scrap of paper, easily discarded in times of danger. It is especially in times of great fear, that we ought to be especially careful about imposing what Mill called "the tyranny of the majority".
