The wonder of a little soul
is no smaller than that of giants
Perhaps instead it is grander in scale
for the multitude of fresh experiences still
awaiting discovery, with appreciation to follow
Or maybe terror at the complexity of novel
    and strange, difficulty which challenges
the littleness or sacredness of same,
    masked and parading as enough

    Outward expanses rival
    inward sensibilities, relentless
    as fodder for supplicants’ pleading
    Perceptions credenced as absolute truths
    Confusing, confounding, castigating, coursing
through veins exposed in sincerest hope
of knowing, birthing, and rearing more
than yesterday’s tired, sorry song in
the wonder of a little soul

With heart and mind in sync - I hope.

This has the feel of a personal rumination aired in the moment it occurs, the way it runs and ponders. But, of course, it is artfully arranged, as 'the wonder of a little soul' at start and end, and the cleverly shaped stanza-pair attest. The first stanza reveals itself simply; the second presents more of a climb, but offers a fine view, once the summit is gained.

Again - your perception stands you in good stead Grant. I'd penned the first and started the second, getting nearly half-way through before deciding that I wanted to return to the nest from which I launched. I just like that phrase 'the wonder of a little soul' - it rings sweetly in my inner ear.

The phrase 'the wonder of a little soul' seems to me strongly redolent of Catholic faith, as is the potential journey imagined for that soul throughout the poem.

Yes, for all the years I have spent learning doctrine (or at least trying), I still feel very much a child before my God. Daddy's girl to the end I hope and pray.

You get me right away RLW The wonder of a little soul the littleness or sacredness. It takes me back. The first poem I ever wrote was entitled- TWO OF THE SACRED POD.three or four life times ago. See you took me back to a more wonderful time in my life

It sounds like to a happier time - if you still have that poem I'd love to hear it! Please share with us. My happy memories are the most healing and lovely to recall! Thanks for taking time to comment TS!

Hi, RLW, The subject matter is compelling, your choice of word and expression enhancing the message, and the little soul, so precious and endearing.

Perhaps instead it is grander in scale

Yes, I am convinced it is. Well, you convinced me simply by raising the question!

      Fresh...appreciation

Certainly not the hallmark of a jaded giant!

      Then, the crowning glory...

      Confusing, confounding, castigating, coursing
through veins exposed in sincerest hope
of knowing, birthing, and rearing more
than yesterday’s tired, sorry song in

the wonder of a little soul

My hat's off to you, RLW! And this is all the better, because you wrote it, and you wrote it the way you did!

Thank you MHenry. I always appreciate how you comment on specifics - as do some others - because it gives me an appreciation of where my words went 'most right' in the whole work. Thank you for the complimentary comments and the like.

I absolutely love this RLW! you have the passion to learn and discover new things. ( noticed in some of your comments here in forum). I salute you for that RLW! The pair of open hands arrangement that Grant mentioned... was that intentional? Very clever! 👍🏼👍🏼😊

Honestly, I didn't even notice. Perhaps I haven't prayed enough today and the Holy Spirit wanted to capture my attention. I have a very good friend who calls that the 'shove of the dove'. I do like it now that it's been brought to my attention. Thank you imrogue, for the comment. The learning curve is some days a bit steeper than others, but I've always liked the idea of swimming against the current.
