I quite agree, grant. However, any spider in my house is already in the wrong place, so that is one strike. And there are only two ways to find out if they are deadly, and that feels like strike two. So, my philosophy is to squash first and ask questions later. I do, however, like to write about them.

If I meet a funnel-web spider in the hallway, then it's no mercy. A little colony of redbacks under the front step will be left alone; they are quiet neighbours. A large huntsman spider is an agreeable (though occasionally alarming) housemate; I once had one living on the headboard of the bed I slept in. Very well-mannered.

A trusting Aussie, you must be. Headboard lodgers -- not my cup of tea.
