Strawberries sound yummy. I planted some last year...a little late in the season. We only got a couple of small fruits, but we built a strawberry bed and hopefully they overwintered and we'll get more fruit this year. No sign of greening yet - they're still pretty heavily mulched.

We have four cats now because we recently adopted two younger ones from my sister, and they love to get in the way of plantings. I'd be upset if they dug up the seedlings after we got them out though. Every time I plant something new they have to "mark" the territory...must be something about the smell of newly turned soil? Anyway, for the garden, even raised beds, we now screen everything until the plants are large enough to keep them out. It's a bother, but I don't know any other way.

I did some more "winter sowing" this afternoon. Since we don't have any place to keep things warm (the cold frame helps very little when temps go below zero) and no grow lights yet, it's the best I can do on getting a jump on things. I've tried it the past two years and had some success (not a lot - I have a difficult time remembering to water regularly..). We really don't live in a zone where you can grow year round (nor am I sure I'd want to), but I am trying to learn to get an earlier start and extend the season a few weeks.
One little step at a time.

I did buy some seed potatoes last week. We've grown those the past couple of years (small scale) because we can usually get more out of them than the seed potatoes cost, we like them when they are new and small (and those cost more in the store), and with prices going up, it's nice to be able to grow something we like to eat.
My sister keeps a garden too, and we swap produce or starter plants sometimes.
I also got onion starts...almost time to get them in the ground too, like the potatoes...sometime in the next couple of weeks is about right for us.

Last year I didn't get many onions. I procrastinated in planting them and they dried out...then I think I planted them in an area that was too shady...this year I hope to do better.
I almost listed onion as the vegetable I'd hate most to do without...there were quite a few that could have tied for first place.
